Frodo was born on a hillside in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on October 30th, 2010. He comes from the Scaramouche family of Shelties, which has a rich history of champion dogs. His father came from Canada and from what we know, his grandmother came from the USA. He has a brother, who lives in Brasilia, but he never writes.
When Frodo first came to us, he was oddly quiet. He hardly ever uttered a sound for the first few months. We thought our puppy was mute. Nowadays, He is very vocal and quite opinionated, I might add. He loves to tell us what he thinks of the neighbours, the vacuum cleaner, the cleaning lady and fireworks (very common in São Paulo). He even has little tiffs with his own reflection. Being a shetland sheepdog, it is in his instinctive nature to shepherd. Since we have no sheep for him to shepherd, I guess he looks at Raquel and I and figures…”Okay, you’ll do!”
He is highly intelligent and understands 3 languages; Portugese, English & Bark. Yes, from time to time we will bark and whimper back at him, but I’m convinced that he laughs at our accent every time.
Frodo the Sheltie, as a funnies page, was born out of some fun interaction I was sharing with friends on Facebook. I posted dialogues between Frodo and myself, called “Conversations with Frodo”, or “Frodo Quotes.” But it wasn’t until October 28th, 2012, that he made his first appearance as a caricature. What I’ve personally enjoyed thus far about this imaginative journey with Frodo, is that each of the cartoon strips comes out of real events. I just add a tremendous amount of creative license.
“Frodo the Sheltie” will be a featured cartoon strip in Global Shelties Magazine (GSM), starting in the 2013 Spring edition. GSM is a free online publication all about Shelties from around the world.
